A Family/Family Room Transformed

Hi guys,

Are you still there? I don’t blame you if you’ve lost your patience with me. I’ve gone from being an occasional blogger to a barely ever blogger. But before I reveal my client’s family room makeover, let me explain where I’ve been.

If you follow me on Instagram, you know I spent most of the summer taking care of my beautiful sister Dina, who was on bedrest while pregnant with her twin boys.

Despite the smiles, it was a scary time. The love and support of our friends, family, and even my clients during this time was everything. I’m BEYOND happy to report our efforts were not in vain. Those boys came out fully cooked and are my most recent obsession. Who knew being an aunt could be so amazing? My heart is bursting with love.

Once things settled down a bit, I spent a little time abroad (also in the name of family!) in Egypt. My Dad, younger sister, and I made the trip out there for my sweet cousin’s wedding.

Always the adventurer, my amazing Dad made sure we did a little bit of sightseeing in Alexandria and Cairo.

IMG_2132It was a quick trip, but well worth it to be with family, especially during those big moments that you remember for a lifetime.

Since I’ve been back, I’ve jumped right back into work, completing this family room for an awesome new client that asked me to freshen up her space. It didn’t take much since she had some great pieces to work with (and we didn’t even paint!), but it really was quite the transformation. Take a look and let me know what you think!

My New Office

***1/27/16 Update below!

Don’t tell my husband, but it all started with a new tape dispenser.

I was shopping online for some new office accessories that were, well, not so ugly, and I came across this acrylic little beauty. When it arrived in the mail, I was shocked at just how pretty it was.

So I started thinking, how inspiring would it be if every single object that surrounded me while I worked had the same feel? Only one way to find out! Afterall, a designer deserves good design too, right?

And so I began to carefully build a space that was light and airy, complete with a spot for every catalog, fabric sample, and file folder. I challenged myself to keep it within a modest budget but maintain a high-end look. Here’s the end result.

A little DIY project- a few yards of fabric, a staple gun, some cork tiles, and an old panel from my painting days made for this custom pinboard.

***1/27/16 UPDATE: I get so many questions about how to recreate this office, so here are a few clarifications!

1.) Where/How did you do that long white cabinet behind the desk. Two units together or is that one unit..and is it from Ikea?
The unit behind my desk was put together using different pieces from IKEA. You will not find it sold as whole unit from Ikea. Here’s what I used…
-I used two Micke drawer/file units and one Micke storage unit in the middle. Unfortunately, I’ve been told the Micke storage unit is no longer available. I mounted the drawer/file units on chrome Besta legs (which are also unfortunately no longer available from what I can see), they ended up being just the right height to place beside the Expedits (now known as Kallax). Try seeing what other legs they have. The key is to get them to the right height with the units beside them.
-The 3 components above are flanked by a pair of two Expedit shelving units (now called Kallax shelving units).
-I topped the whole thing off with two long white thick laminate surfaces from a single Lack TV Unit (my own little Ikea hack*). I attached them together with a brace (aka a “strap tie”) from Home Depot. I can’t find the exact spec. for the one I used, but this one is very similar. Try and find it in a longer length. If it’s available at 18” long, that’ll work well since the top would be approx. 21 5/8” deep, so they’ll hold together better.
*Keep in mind there will be a seam down the center and a couple of predrilled holes since it’s originally meant to be used as TV unit. I realize this is a somewhat unfinished look, but I knew my top would be covered in design trays 99% of the time, and my budget was tight back then. The two pieces together were the perfect length and depth for my room and the built-in as a whole, so it was definitely the right way for me to go! I like the thickness of it as a countertop and the way it just visually finished it all off.  You DON’T have to go this route. You can always choose another countertop. I also like the butcher block counters they sell, but you’d have to look into the dimensions it comes in.

2. What desk is that?

My desk is made up of two Finnvard trestle legs and one Linnmon high gloss top.
